MULENGA MUSONDA writes

A 21-YEAR-OLD Zambia National Service civilian employee has pleaded guilty to trafficking in over 500 grammes of Cannabis before the Choma Magistrates.

In this matter Martin Mwaka, 23, a student and James Dowati, a ZNS civilian employee, are charged with Trafficking in Psychotropic Substances contrary to the Laws of Zambia.

Particulars of the offence are that the duo trafficked in 512gms of Marijuana, a herbal product of Cannabis Sativa without lawful authority or medical recommendation.

The incident happened on 22 June 2020 in Choma.

The two were rounded up on the same day by the Drug Enforcement Commission Officers.

When they appeared for plea before Senior Resident Magistrate Idah Mupemo, they without hesitation admitted the charge read to them.

Both Mwaka and Dowati told the Court that despite not knowing the exact weight of the Cannabis, it was concealed in a plastic at the time of their apprehension.

After they pleaded guilty, Magistrate Mupemo recorded pleas of guilty in respect of both of them.

However, the matter could not proceed into Facts as the State Prosecutor Pearson Chilumbu applied for an adjournment to another date in order to prepare typed Facts and wait for the public analyst report.

The matter was adjourned to 9 July, 2020 for facts, record and possible sentencing.

The two were remanded in custody as the offence is non-bailable.
