PARAMOUNT Chief Mpezeni of the Ngoni Speaking People of Eastern Province has commended Government for the efforts it is making in promoting national values and principles in the country.

He says the introduction of national values and principles will play a major role in uplifting moral standards in the country.

ZANIS reports that the Paramount Chief was speaking in Chipata, when Assistant Director in the Ministry of National Guidance and Religious Affaires Godfrey Kaoma, paid a courtesy call on him at his EphendukeniPalace.

And Paramount Chief Mpezeni urged the Ministry of National Guidance and Religious Affairs to come up with a programme that will enable officers to visit chiefdoms to educate citizens   on national values and principles and their importance.

“I want to commend the government for its efforts aimed at ensuring that people in the country follow the national values and principles,” he said.

And speaking earlier, Mr Kaoma, said the national values and principles enshrined in the constitution can play an effective role in promoting development in all parts of the country.

He noted that traditional leaders as custodians of national values and principles must play a key role in changing the mindset of Zambians to realise the economic development we yearn for in the country.

“As chiefs in the Province you must partner with our Ministry to ensure that the national values and principles enshrined in the constitution can be applied and followed your people in the villages,” Mr Kaoma said.

Mr Kaoma reminded the Chief that when President Edgar Lungu opened Parliament this year, he appealed to the traditional leaders to appreciate the national values and principles so that people can live together by abiding by moral values and ethics.

“President Lungu also challenged you traditional leaders to use national values and principles to step up the fight against early marriages and sexual abuses against young girls as well as promote moral behaviour and respect to the elderly,” he said.

Mr Kaoma urged the traditional leaders to effectively educate their subjects on the national values and principles so that the One Zambia One Nation motto can manifest. – ZANIS.
