FRANCIS CHIPALO writes

FORMER Lusaka Mayor Daniel Chisenga has commended the Ubusaka Initiative introduced by his successor Miles Sampa, which he says, has helped clean up the capital city.

“It is impressive to see the amount of commitment and dedication by the council to clear garbage around the city despite having few garbage trucks. It is also good to see them start trimming the trees around town, particularly along Cairo Road where they are overgrown,” Mr. Chisenga said.

He has advised the local authority to also consider setting up a waste to energy generating plant, which would help boost its finances and create employment for the women and youths.

In an interview with The Sun in Lusaka yesterday, Mr. Chisenga appealed to the private sector to get involved in the Ubusaka Initiative because it was an ambitious way to control outbreaks of waterborne diseases in Lusaka.

The Ubusaka Initiative, recently launched by Mr. Sampa, seeks to reward the cleanest households in Lusaka and the peri-urban area with K1, 000 on a monthly basis as a way to encourage other households to clean up their surroundings.

“I would like to advise the council to review the contracts for conventional waste management companies and performance based companies so that they also compelled to empty the litter bins around the city,” he said.

“The performance based contractors should also be requested to construct walkways in their respective operational zones other than just cleaning up streets and unblock drainages,” stated Chisenga.
