ZAMBIA has in the last 24 hours recorded three deaths and 229 new cases of COVID-19 out of 1,112 tests, Ministry of health spokesperson, Dr Abel Kabalo has announced.

Dr Kabalo said the cumulative number of COVID-19 cases in the country stood at 7,022 including 176 deaths and 5,667 recoveries.

The spokesperson was speaking during the COVID-19 briefing yesterday.

He said of the three new COVID-19 related deaths in the last 24 hours, one was a female adult from Itezhi Tezhi, while another one was a 43-year-old female who was admitted to a private health facility.

Dr Kabalo further announced that a 71-year-old male, known hypertensive who was being treated for severe pneumonia at Levy Mwanawasa Isolation Centre died.

“Among the active cases, 45 are on oxygen support.  Six patients are critical with five admitted to the Intensive Care Unit.

“In addition, among the positive cases, the proportion presenting with severe disease has also increased significantly,” Dr Kabalo said.

He said the ministry was worried about the poor adherence to COVID-19 prevention measures.
