LILLIAN CHIKANDI writes

@SunZambian

CHIRUNDU District Commissioner, Mr. Alfred Tom Hamunjo, has appealed to motorists in the district to observe road traffic rules to avoid accidents and causing unnecessary deaths.

Mr. Hamunjo reminded motorists that human life is sacred and that no one has a right to take it.

He called on them to drive responsibly as is expected of them

The district commissioner was speaking after a couple, Mr. Micheal Mabuntu and his wife Chipo, died in a head-on collision accident near Zulu Park, along the Lusaka-Chirundu road, around 21:00hours on Wednesday night.

The accident involved a Toyota Carina registration no. ALX 3407 and a Toyota Noah bus, registration no. AL J 3347 which was carrying three men, one of them identified as Mr. Lula, a well-known carpenter at Chirundu main market.

The deceased were coming from buying foodstuff at Chirundu town.

Mr. Hamunjo disclosed that the couple in the Carina died on the spot while Mr. Lula and his friend were severely injured.

“Mr. Lula sustained deep cuts on his leg and lost a lot of blood and had evacuated to the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka,” he said.

The driver of the Carina initially ran away but later reported himself to the police.

And Chirundu Central Ward councilor, Chrispin Malesu, has described the death of Mr. Mabuntu and his wife, as devastating.

Mr. Malesu described the death of the couple as disheartening because they were an active family which contributed greatly to community development through participation in programmes.

According to the councilor, Mr. Mabuntu was one of the people pushing for the construction of a maternity ward at Chiwende clinic.

He regretted that the road accidents have continued to claim more lives and appealed to the road users to take it easy to save lives.

He also wished the hospitalized accident victims a quick recovery.
