THE Ministry of Health has been advised to stop the construction of another incinerator in Chazanga Compound in view of air pollution leveled against the one at Chipata level one hospital.
The incinerator, now at roof level, is being built at the Chazanga Clinic which is situated right in the heart of the compound, a few metres from the private residences.
Last week, The Lusaka Sun published a story about how the foul smell and smoke from the incinerator at Lusaka’s Chipata compound has caused a conflict between the hospital administrators and the nearest neighbours.
The story quoted a Mr Kennedy Makukula, who has lived with the smell for five years, demanding that the hospital either moves the incinerator or buys his house off because he has had enough.
Mr Mukukula also disclosed that he contacted the Ministry of Health over the matter and complained to the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) but that no action has been taken to date.
“We are dying slowly with my family due to this health hazard and air pollution from the incinerator which is three meters away from the house as well as the storage room where they keep placentas just after the hospital mortuary. The smoke, smell and flies that come from the incinerator are bad and we don’t breathe well,” he complained.
Ministry of Health spokesperson then promised to follow up the matter and revert to The Sun.
