CHARLES MUSONDA writes

THE Lusaka Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a general worker to one month imprisonment with hard labour for unlawfully wearing a Zambia Police uniform. Before Magistrate Felix Kaoma was Mike Njobvu, 25, of Mtendere compound, who pleaded guilty to the offence. Facts before court were that Njobvu was on February 25, 2019 found patrolling in a police uniform in Mtendere by Kalikiliki police post officers who were equally on patrol. The officers suspected him of not being a genuine policeman after which they apprehended him. Upon being interviewed, Njobvu failed to give a satisfactory answer and they consequently charged and arrested him for the said offence. In pleading guilty last Friday, Njobvu told the court that he found the full police uniform with a cap on the road near Bennie Mwiinga police post. Asked by the court why he did not surrender the uniform to the police, he said he wanted to do so but was hindered by the influence of alcohol. When the case came up for sentencing on Monday, Njobvu asked for the court’s lenience, adding that he is scheduled to write his grade exam this July.

Passing sentence, Mr. Kaoma considered his mitigation adding that he did not waste the court’s time and consequently sentenced him to one month imprisonment with hard labour.
