A 28 year old man of Chimwemwe village in Chama District of Muchinga Province has drowned in Luangwa River as he was trying to cross.

The matter was reported to the Police in Chama District onTuesday at about 09:15 hours.

Muchinga Province Police Commissioner Joel Njaseconfirmed to ZANIS that the incident occurred on August 31, 2020 at unknown time at Kaozi Luangwa River in Chama District.

Eng Njase stated that a telephone call was received from Soliani Coma 61, of Chimwemwe village stating that Kondwani Mwapashi, 28, of the same address drowned in Luangwa River as he tried to cross with a view of ferrying two bags of rice on his bicycle.

”The man managed to ferry one bag but on his way to get the remaining bag of rice, he is suspected to have drowned or caught by a crocodile,” Eng Njase said.

And Chama District Commissioner Leonard Ngoma told ZANIS this morning that body of the victim was retrieved  inthe late hours of yesterday and has been deposited in Chama District Hospital mortuary waiting post-mortem.

Mr Ngoma appealed to residents in the area to be careful as they cross the Luangwa River as well as other rivers whose water levels are high.
