WARD Development Committees should spearhead the monthly cleaning exercise on Saturday, Kitwe Local Government Administrator Adam Jere has suggested.
The cleaning exercise is under the ‘Make Zambia Clean, Green and Healthy Campaign, commissioned by President Edgar Lungu in 2018.Mr Jere said all Ward Development Committees should work with residents to ensure high standards of cleanliness and hygiene in communities.“Everyone must be actively involved in the cleaning exercise especially marketeers as markets are among public places that generate a lot of waste,” he said.Mr Jere said that people participating in the cleaning exercise should however observe COVID-19 guidelines such as wearing of masks and maintaining a one metre social distance. He directed that all business premises remain closed to clients from 07:00 hours to 10:00 hours to allow for the general cleaning.The Local Government Administrator, who was appointed after the suspension of councillors, said the council would monitor and provide all equipment necessary for the cleaning exercise.
Mr Jere said that the Council Department of Public Health would intensify garbage collection to ensure waste was collected from all designated place after the cleaning exercise.
