TRADERS and marketeers at Siavonga main market have complained of poor sanitation at local authority operated public toilets.

But council chairman James Simataa who confirmed the poor state of the toilets promised to rectify the situation as soon as possible.

Mr Simataa, who inspected the toilets after an outcry from the traders, has assured that action would be taken to improve sanitation at the public ablution block situated in the recreation park.

He said the local authority would do everything possible to improve sanitary conditions at all public toilets in the CBD to bring them to acceptable standard.

The traders told the Sun in an interview the toilets in their current state posed serious health hazards to them and the general public.

They said that if the council had failed to run the newly constructed ablution block, they should consider leasing it the Market Development Committee(MDC).

“While we appreciate that public toilets have become a famous money-making venture for the local authority, poor sanitation has characterised these toilets and are posing a serious health hazard,” they said

Meanwhile, former Kariba Ward WDC chairman Agenty Hakanchemba has accused the Siavonga District Council of bringing confusion in the running of markets in the area.

He alleged that during the elections of MDC committee members held last week, some people with vested interests at local authority fronted their preferred candidates against the wishes of traders.

“After they discovered that their people were not on the list of nominated members, they decided to defer the elections but my advice is that the council should stop these political moves and concentrate on service provision,” said Mr Hakanchemba.
