Frank N’gambi

SANFROSSA MANYINDA writes

DAYS are numbered for the free-reigning criminals in Ndola’s Mitengo residential area as measures are being put in place to stop the escalating crime levels.

Thieves in the area have gone on a rampage, stealing household items and pulling down Zesco cables.

This has been happening for the past six months, raising concern among residents who have now mobilised to bring down the organised crime ring.

Community members and area Member of Parliament (MP) Frank N’gambi will organise full police patrols to ensure that all criminals were wiped out.

Mr Ng’ambi told The Sun in an interview yesterday that efforts were being made quietly and that all criminals would soon be brought down.

“My office has been making efforts to open a police post in the area in order to curb these criminal activities. We have also been holding meetings with the police command to see how we can intensify patrols so that properties and lives are secured,” he said.

The MP warned that it certainly would not take long for perpetrators to be brought to book as the police service was well equipped and ready to arrest them.

He said there were other measures that would be put in place, but could not reveal them, fearing to alert the criminals about the imminent trap.

Mr Ng’ambi further appealed to the residents to revive and intensify the neighbourhood watch to ensuring that there was security in the area.

He advised residents to report suspicious persons to the nearest police and that strangers would be treated with caution as some of them could be involved in the spate of crime.

Mitengo, which sits between the Ndola-Mufulira Road and Chifubu Township, has recorded a spate of crime in the last six months.

Residents suspect that some care-takers in unfinished properties could be conniving with criminals and former domestic workers.

They have since called for registration of care-takers so that they were monitored while domestic workers should be screened thoroughly.
