CHILANGA Lions B Club where on Friday crowned champions of the inaugural Kondwani Sakala Rugby tournament, held at the Red Arrows Rugby Club in the Lusaka Showgrounds.
The Chilanga Lions B Club emerged victorious after beating it’s ‘A’ team, in a tournament played in honour of Kondwani Sakala, a former long standing teenage player of the Rugby club who died in December 2018.
The memorial tournament was hosted by Chilanga Lions Rugby Club in collaboration with the late player’s family to honor the late Rugby player who joined the Club at the age of 11 years and was a member until his death at the age of 18.
Mwati Sakala, who is also the elder sister of the late, told the Sun in an interview that the Chilanga Lions and her family decided to honor the late teenage Rugby player through a tournament hosted in his name.
“This tournament is all about celebrating Kondwani Sakala’s life, he was a Rugby player and was with the Club up to the time of his death last year on the 20th December, at the age of18. He would have been 19 years old this year,” She said.
Mwati said, “My brother joined the Chilanga Lions Rugby Club in 2011 at the age of 11 and so the boys (Lions Club) decided to honor him through a Rugby tournament as today would have been his 19th birthday and luckily it fell on a holiday.”
The tournament attracted scores of junior Rugby teams, namely Chilanga Lions A and B teams, Chibolya, Kafue Rugby team and UNZA Rugby teams, among others.
