A VILLAGE headman of Chama district reportedly accused of witchcraft has killed himself, police have revealed.

The man, identified as Zondani Kango 75, commited suicide by hanging himself  after being accused of being a wizard.

Muchinga province police Commissioner Joel Njase said    Kango , a village headman for Chikololi village in Chief Chibale’s area committed suicide by hanging himself to a tree with a rope after his subjects accused  him of being a wizard.

Mr Njase said the incident happened on Sunday around 11;00 hours in Chikoli village approximately 80 km from Isoka town.

The matter was reported by Aaron Mukisi of Chinkoli village, Chief Chibale, also a Community Crime Prevention Unity (CCPU) member to the effect that the village headman had committed suicide.

‘‘The brief facts are such that the community in his village accused him of being a wizard and due to stigma and ridicule of this suspicion, he sneaked out of the village  into the bush ,’’ he said.

Mr Njase said the deceased went missing on Sunday around 11:00 hours  and was only discovered dead in the bush hanging  from a tree in Chinkoli village approximately 80 kilometres from Isoka Boma , during a search which was conducted by the villagers.

Mr Njase said the family members of the deceased person suspect no foul play and have since been advised to bury and mark the grave in order to facilitate exhumation in case of something coming up.
