622 pupils benefit from KGS program

Government through the World Bank has spent K361, 312.00 to pay school fees for vulnerable children in Shiwang’andu district of Muchinga Province under the programme, Keeping Girls in School (KGS).Shiwang’andu District Education Planning Officer, Kelvin Mwanza confirmed this development in an interview with the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Shiwang’andu yesterday.Mr Mwanza said government has paid School fees for 622 pupils for the 2020 academic year.He revealed that the KGS programme has made a great impact in the lives of many girls in Shiwang’andu since it was implemented in 2017.“The KGS programme is making an impact in the lives of many girls in the district since it started in 2017 and for the year 2020, we have already paid school fees for 622 pupils who are on the programme,” said Mr Mwanza.Mr Mwanza pointed out that, enrolment levels of girls in secondary schools has increased since the programme was implemented in the district.Mr Mwanza said in order to promote KGS in the district, the Ministry of Education in Shiwang’andu, has intensified sensitization on early marriages so that many girls can benefit from KGS.

He said KGS programme was planned to phase out in 2021 but it has been extended to 2024 with support from World Bank.
