A WOMAN told a Local Court in Lusaka that she was impregnated by another man while on separation from her husband because he was not maintaining her.
This is in a case in which Sylvia Kandeo, 27, of Chipata Overspill sued her husband, George Phiri, 28, of Kabanana site and service for divorce which was granted to her.
The two got married in 2013 and have one child.
Kandeo told Senior Court Magistrate Pauline Newa at Matero Local Court that she had no peace since the inception of her marriage because the family of Phiri was asking why she was not conceiving.
She explained that Phiri was always insulting her and accused her of being without manners because elders did not teach her marriage life.
She said that in 2015 she went to her parents place because Phiri was insulting her in public.
When I said that we should go to the Pastor because of our problems Phiri insulted the Pastor. In August 2017 Phiri decided to take me to my parents,’’ said Kandeo.
In defence, Phiri said that each time he differed with Kandeo she would get a knife and cut his shirts and bragged that there were men out there who knew how to make love to her.
He explained that when Kandeo threatened him with a knife he would start looking for a mourning house to spend a night with mourners.
Phiri further told the court that they separated with Kandeo because she threatened to poison him and get married to another man.
“Later I found Kandeo with a man and the other time Kandeo was with her mother at in company of the same man. The mother of Kandeo said that they were sharing the word of God. But later I discovered that Kandeo was pregnant and she has since married,’’ said Phiri.
Asked by the court if she was impregnated by another man, Kandeo admitted he was responsible for the pregnancy.
She accused Phiri of not maintaining her and was the reason she found somebody to help her.
In submission, Kandeo said that she wanted divorce but Phiri said that he still wanted to continue in marriage with Kandeo because children would suffer.
The court said that there was lack of communication and evidence ofviolence because Kandeo picks knives each time the couple differed.
The court said that Kandeo was impregnated by another man which translated into adultery.
The court granted the couple divorce without compensation but ordered Phiri to be paying children maintenance fee of K200 per month. Households items acquired together to be shared equally.
