The Walls of ‘Jericho’ came tumbling down on ‘Jericho’ after the Choma Magistrates Court convicted and jailed him 6 months for stealing a duck.
In this matter, 22 years old Jericho Mainza was found guilty of breaking into a building and committing a felony therein contrary to the Laws of Zambia.Particulars of the offence are that Mainza on September 12 in Choma district, jointly and whilst acting with others unknown broke into a chicken run and stole 1 duck valued at K75 the property of Esther Sikaleya.According to the facts on record, Mainza broke into the chicken run and stole the duck after a drinking spree.When he appeared for judgment before Court, Resident Magistrate Ethel Phiri convicted the accused person after establishing that he had no claim of right over the Bird, and that he intended to deprive the owner permanently.
Despite Mainza begging the Court that he looks after his disabled mother and sponsors six of his siblings to School, Magistrate Phiri sentenced him to 6 months simple imprisonment in order to deter would be offenders.
