THE Leadership Movement has expressed worry at the way Zambian workers are treated by their Chinese employers and has since called on Government to pay more attention to labour matters.
Party National Youth Coordinator Chalwe Chandalala said it was unfortunate that some Chinese companies were holding workers hostage by not allowing them to go home due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
He was speaking to The Sun in Kitwe.
“It has come to our attention that some Chinese companies are violating workers’ rights by not allowing workers to go home after work for over five months, citing the corona virus especially on the Copperbelt, Lusaka and Southern provinces.
Mr Chandalala wondered why the employers were behaving in such a manner with the full knowledge of the Labour Commissioner, Human Rights Commission and the local authorities.
He said it was unfortunate that such firms went unpunished after breaking the law in such a manner adding thst it was inhuman for some foreign employers to continue mistreating Zambian workers.
He said that many Zambian workers especially youths failed to speak out after being mistreated because they feared to lose jobs.
Mr Chandalala demanded that the matter must be addressed urgently as many Zambian employees were suffering at the hands of employers.
