THE introduction of provincial soccer cup by FAZ is a step in the right direction as it will enable the association to have a wider pool to select players for the national team, a sport analyst has said.
Tyson Mlauzi said the move was most welcome as they were many players out there being deprived of chances to showcase their soccer skills and talents.
“We only have one cup game which is the Barclays Cup and thereby a lot of players are deprived a chance to showcase their skill and talents. The move is timely,” said Mlauzi
He was commenting on recently announced plans by FAZ to introduce provincial cup tournaments targeting teams in the lower division such as Division 2 and 3,
“If we can have such tournaments at provincial level, it will give us a wider pool to select players from for the national teams,
“This will also give a chance to players at the highest levels and I commend FAZ for this step and I believe that this will massively improve the game of football in Zambia,” he said.
Mlauzi however said such a move required serious planning by FAZ.
“My advice to FAZ is that knowing that we have never had provincial tournaments, this calls for a lot of hard work by FAZ in terms of organization,” he said.
He said the tournaments should be able to motivate players and that one of the ways of doing that was for the organizers coming up with enticing prize money so that both clubs and players were encouraged to participate.
