ONE inmate has died on the spot while two others have been admitted to Kabwe Central Hospital with minor injuries after the bus they were in was involved in an accident Zambia Correctional Service (ZCS) head of public relations and acting Senior Assistant Commissioner, Doreen Ngoma has said.
Ms Ngoma said that the incident happened around 06:50hours when 454 inmates from Kabwe Maximum Security Correctional Facility were being transferred to Mwembeshi Maximum Correctional Centre which is part of the decongestion programme in the facilities.
In a statement, Ms Ngoma said that it was during the operation that one of the ZCS buses Registration No. PS 3424, was involved in an accident after failing to negotiate a curve about three (03) kilometers from Kabwe on the Great North Road.
Ms Ngoma said that the bus went off the road and fell on its right side and that one inmate died while the other two others were treated and discharged.
“ZCS regrets to announce the unfortunate road traffic accident involving 30 inmates and 3 officers this morning around 06:50 hours, the transfer of inmates was part of the on-going programme to decongest our facilities,” she said.
