CHUCKLES resonated in the Kabushi Local Court in Ndola when a 57-year-old man admitted that he has taken another woman as a second wife without the wife’s consent.
Juston Kabunga said this in defence during a marriage reconciliation case initiated by his wife Katherine Mwaba 50, of Kabushi Township.
Kabunga openly told the Kabushi local court that he had already paid dowry for the girlfriend and had made her a second wife.
“I am willing to reconcile with my wife but I want to let her know that I have already taken another woman as a second wife, and I also love her,” Kabunga said.
His wife, who wanted to reconcile with him, was visibly shocked upon hearing that he had already paid dowry and made his girlfriend a second wife without informing her.
“I am very shocked and surprised that he can take such a decision without letting me know. I knew that he had a girlfriend in Chipulukusu where he spends nights but I was not aware that he even paid dowry too,” she lamented.
The matter came before Kabushi Local Court presiding magistrate Mildred Namwizye sitting with Evelyn Nalwizya.
When the magistrate asked Mwaba if the court could go ahead and reconcile the two, she later refused and said it was better the marriage ended.
“Even if I love my husband and wanted this marriage to work, I will not accept to be in a polygamous marriage, it’s better this marriage ends so that he can carry on with the other woman,” she said.
The court dismissed the case, stating that Kabunga had already taken a second wife and was not willing to leave her.
“Since he has refused to leave the other woman the court has hereby dismissed this case. However we advise Mwaba to sue for divorce if she is not willing to be in a polygamous marriage,” Ms Namwizye said.
