A 42 year old man of Kanabeza village in Chama District of Muchinga Province has been killed by an elephant.
The incidence was reported at Chama Police Station yesterday, September 25, 2020 at 08:30 hours.Muchinga Province deputy commissioner, Geoffrey Kunda confirmed the incidence to the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Chinsali District yesterday.The Deputy Commissioner said Gibson Mtonga aged 77 of the same address reported that his son Manase Mwandila, 42, was attacked and killed by an elephant.“The now deceased met his fate when he went to his garden early in the morning and on his way back the animal charged on him and eventually killed him,” he said.Mr Kunda stated that the body of the deceased was observed with deep cuts in the head, right side of the neck, left arm, right thighs and on the right ear.“The body has since been handed over to the relatives for burial whilst the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Authority (DNPWA) Officers have launched a manhunt for the animal,” Mr Kunda said.Meanwhile, Chama District Commissioner Leonard Ngoma has appealed to the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Authority (DNPWA) to come to the aid of the people in the area before the situation gets worse.
Mr Ngoma said it is sad that issues of human animal conflict are becoming high in Chama saying residents are now leaving in fear-ZANIS.
