A 22-year-old salesman of a cement agent in Silverest area in Chongwe has appeared in court for allegedly stealing K9, 700 belonging to his employer.
This is in a matter where Alick Sakala was appearing for trial before Chongwe magistrate Kabwe Tembo. He is charged with theft by servant contrary to Section 272 and 278 of the penal code, Chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia.Particulars of the offence are that the accused is alleged to have stolen cash money for the day’s sales at a cement shop where he was employed. The incident allegedly happened on May 23 this year.A witness, Benjamin Mwanza who is the employer submitted that he did not owe the accused any money not even in salary arrears. He told the court that he earlier visited the business premises and collected part of the money for the day sales on the material day.He disclosed that the accused later called him and told him that he had lost K9, 700.00 in unexplained circumstances. He said that he doubted the report and asked the employee to just look for the money and return it. He revealed that efforts to retrieve the money failed and he was then compelled to report the matter to police and hence the matter before court. He insisted that all he wanted was his money, but the accused who had worked for him for over one year was not making any effort. He said that he later assured the accused that he would withdraw the case if he did a piece of work equivalent to the amount in question this too had failed.
The court adjourned the matter to November 3rd for continued trial while the accused is on bail.
