A 17-year-old girl has died on the spot while her younger sister sustained injuries after a speeding vehicle hit them while on a bicycle in Mkushi.
The accident occurred on Monday around 09:00 hours on Great North Road at Katuba, 12km away Mkushi.
Central province Commissioner of police, Chola Katanga, confirmed the incident in an interview and identified the deceased as Charity Nzombola of Katuba area.
He further identified the other two victims as Christine Nzombola aged nine and the cyclist as 17-year-old John Kunda 17, both of Katuba, who were admitted to Mkushidistrict hospital.
Mr Katanga said an unregistered Toyota Altezza driven by Aaron Silungwe 40, of Katonzi compound in Nakonde district was driving from the eastern direction towards the west when the accident happened.
Mr Kunda carried the two passengers as he cycled on the road at the time of the accident.
Mr Katanga said Charity sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot while Mr Kunda and passenger Christine sustained serious injuries and were admitted to Mkushi district hospital.
“The motor vehicle has depressed roof and shattered front windscreen and front fender damaged while the bicycle is extensively damaged. The driver is detained in police custody,” Mr Katanga.
