FIVE people, among them a 22-year-old woman and her two children, have died on the spot while 17 others sustained injuries in a road traffic accident which occurred on Mansa-Samfya road at Lusenga of Chitambo area.The driver, identified as Enock Chilufya Malama, is among the injured.Police spokesperson Esther Katongo said the accident happened on Monday around 16:30 hours.She said that Mr Malama aged 48 was driving a Toyota Hiace registration number BCB 9737 from Serenje to Mpelembe area and had 21 passengers.Ms Katongo said that the accident happened when he lost control of the vehicle after a left rear tyre burst.The vehicle went off the road to the right-side and overturned several times and five passengers died on the spot.Ms Katongo identified the dead as Ms Memory Kunda of Mpelembe area, Ms Ludia Mwansa, 22 also of Mpelembe area with her two children, Judith Kalunga aged two and Astrida Kalunga aged four.“Also involved was Ms Christina Mwitwa aged 67 of Katonga area.“Nine passengers sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Chitambo District Hospital while eight others were treated and discharged from Mulaushi Rural Health Centre.
“The bodies are in Serenje District Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem,” Ms Katongo said.
