THE Siavonga district council has been advised to review its strategy of the “keep Zambia clean and green’ if it is to have a visible impact on the lives of people in the resort town.
A concerned resident, Farai Mbone said the current strategy in which, a group of council workers and civil servants were organized to go and clean a particular area at very month end was not sustainable and encouraged laziness among residents.
”Residents in the area have now become so careless in managing their litter because they know that at the month-end, civil servants will come and clean the dirt.
“For example, last time a group of council workers and civil servants went to Mitchol compound to clean and surprisingly the owners of the compound were busy with their own business and could not bothered,” he said
He said it was clear that the cup campaign was being carried out just for the sake of record which was contrary to the reasons President Edgar Lungu launched the programme last year.
”The ideology behind the re-launching of the ‘keep Zambia clean and green’ by the President was to ensure that cleanliness was imparted into every citizen of Zambia through participation by all.
He said while there was nothing wrong with the local authority spearheading the campaign, the council should ensure that residents owned the campaign if it was to be planted in them.
‘”For instance this month they choose to go and clean the hospital surrounding which was already clean and obviously the patients were just laughing at them,” he said jokingly.
Meanwhile, another resident, Astridah Mweemba called on the local authority to penalize some residents in Kanyelele compound who had no toilets at their premises.
She said the same residents were fond of using plastic carrier bags to answer the call of nature which they later disposed off on roadside.
