Lusaka City Council (LCC) has announced that it will soon commence the killing of stray dogs in order to reduce on their number and promote the people’s safety.
Public Relations Manager, George Sichimba, said that most dogs were just roaming about, particularly around school, college and university grounds, thereby endangering the lives of students.
“We will embark on the destruction of stray, unvaccinated and unregistered dogs in all the 33 wards of Lusaka in conjunction with the police,” said Mr. Sichilima.
In a statement to the Sun, the council spokesperson expressed hope that the residents would support the programme in order to eliminate rabies in the capital city.
He stated that, “Mid last year, our Public Health department undertook a door-to-door dog registration and vaccination sensitization programme in all the wards with the hope of increasing the levels of compliance with dog vaccination and registration.”
Mr. Sichimba explained that the residents were also sensitized on how to keep dogs in line with the Control of Dogs Act, Cap 247 of the Laws of Zambia, which requires a household to only keep two dogs.
He advised that those who want to keep more than two dogs should secure permission from the Council, and that the animals need to be secured during day time and only freed at night but confined to the owner’s premises.
